Amino Acids: Lysine is an essential amino acid because it cannot be produced by the body and therefore must be consumed in the diet. Lysine is an important component of many proteins. Lysine has been shown to be important for recovery following exercise and has also been shown to reduce cortisol and increase GH levels. Lysine plays an important role in the absorption and utilization of dietary calcium. Calcium is important for building bones, initiating skeletal muscle contraction and has been shown to be important in maintaining a healthy body weight. Lysine has been largely ignored in the bodybuilding and fitness community but it may help to increase skeletal muscle growth while reducing body fat. Two grams of Lysine per day may also help to reduce blood sugar by increasing the action of insulin. This dose has also been shown to decrease plasma cortisol levels and anxiety.
