HCT can potentially cause low potassium levels so supplementation may become necessary. Steroid using athletes will use HCT to reduce bloat and high blood pressure brought on by a cycle. The use of diuretics by bodybuilders to shed water for competitions and by other athletes who compete in weight classes, particularly when limiting water intake is a potentially dangerous practice. Dehydration, cramping and electrolyte disturbances that can cause abnormal cardiac rhythms are potentially serious side effects. Hydrochlorothiazide is generally considered to be safer in with regard to these side effects than furosemide but the danger still exists. Used in low doses to help keep blood pressure low and to reduce sodium retention, hydrochlorothiazide will improve the cardiovascular risk of AAS.
