WHAT IS IT?
1,3-Dimethylamylamine is a legal over the counter stimulant that can be extracted from geraniums. You may also see it referred to as geranium extract, geranamine, methylhexaneamine, or DMAA. 1,3-Dimethylamylamine was patented by the drug company Eli Lilly as a nasal decongestant and given the trademark name Forthane. At a much later date it was introduced to the supplement market by Proviant Technologies under the trademark name Geranamine and included in the supplements Clear Shot and Amp. Since its introduction to the supplement market in 2006, many more supplements have started including 1.3-dimethylamylamine in their formulas as well. Here is an example of a weight loss supplement that utilizes this extract.
WHAT DOES IT DO?
1,3-Dimethylamylamine acts as a norepinephrine releasing agent. Elevated norepinephrine causes effects such as increased energy and focus among other effects such as vasoconstriction. Anecdotally, those who take 1,3-Dimethylamylamine typically note increased energy, focus, heightened senses, and euphoria.
Some have suggested that 1,3-dimethylamylamine somehow stimulates dopamine release which would be a contributing factor to its euphoric effects, but it is unknown whether or not this actually occurs. Most people tolerate 1,3-dimethylamylamine well and enjoy its effects. Some, however, experience negative reactions such as “crashing” or experiencing a rapid decline in its effects a few hours after taking it, resulting in very low energy and sometimes an emotional low as well.
The typical dosing range for 1,3-dimethylamylamine is around 25-75 mg per dose. Its effects seem to last a bit longer that those of caffeine, but heightened energy and focus will still only be apparent for a few hours give or take depending on the user. Those who do not “crash” from 1,3-dimethylamylamine appear to feel its positive effects for longer periods of time. Many pre-workout and energy supplements combine 1,3-dimethylamylamine with caffeine and other stimulants, but it can also be purchased by itself in capsule and powder form.
