Phase 2 ™ is a proprietary extract of the white kidney bean. It is used as a carbohydrate blocker, as it supposedly prevents the breakdown of complex carbs into glucose, so some carbohydrates and as a result calories are not fully absorbed. A study published in the International Journal of Medical Sciences examined the effects of Phase 2 ™ on weight and body composition of overweight individuals.

60 participants were included in the study, all overweight. For 30 days the participants ate a 2000-2200 kcal per day diet and supplemented with either 445 mg of the Phase 2 ™ extract or a placebo supplement once daily before the most carbohydrate heavy meal of the day. At the end of the 30 days, it was found that the group using the Phase 2 ™ extract lost significantly more weight and had greater improvements in the fat mass to lean mass ratio than the group using the placebo supplement.

The difference in weight loss between then groups while eating the same number of calories seems to indicate that the Phase 2 ™ had some significant calorie blocking effect. I would assume that the greater improvements in body compostition were simply as result of less carbohydrate calories absorbed that of an actual fat burning effect. While a similar or identical effect could be achieved by simply reducing carbohydrate and calorie intake, Phase 2 ™ does appear to work as advertised for weight and fat loss by blocking carbohydrate breakdown and absorption
