One of the things I have learned since I started bodybuilding is that it’s important to focus on the “muscle-mind connection”.
What is it?
Every movement is controlled by our brain. In order to contract your muscle during a lift, your brain tells the muscles to contract. The brain releases a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine which then travels to the neuromuscular junction and crosses the synapse. After crossing the synapse, it binds to the receptors on the surface of the specific muscle and causes the muscle fibers to contract.
What are the benefits?
- Increases the number of muscle fibers being recruited.Every muscle head is made up of many muscle fibers. By increasing your mind-muscle connection it will help to activate all those fibers.
- You can fully engage the muscles and don’t just go through the motions.
- Injury prevention.
- Helps to focus.
Never really thought about what muscles you are working? Get prepared prior to hitting the weights. Educate yourself about the anatomy and physiology of the human body. Understand what muscles certain exercises are working. And, one thing that’s helped me personally a lot is to just focus. Plug your headphones in and get into the “zone”. Being focused on movements, muscles and your own thing at the gym will definitely help you get the most out of your workout.
