Maca root is a popular sports supplement and is also included in many sexual enhancement products as an herbal “replacement” for Viagra. The studies on Maca root show it to have some desirable qualities for men looking to increase sexual potency and desire but not as a testosterone boosting agent or “phytoandrogen”.
A phytoandrogen is an herb that acts like testosterone in the body. Maca shows zero androgenic activity on its own, meaning it isn’t going to build muscle via this pathway. A a Journal of Ethnopharmacology article in 2006 reports that “Lepidium meyenii (Maca) does not exert direct androgenic activities.” So, it isn’t going to act as a phytotestosterone or pSARM product.
Additionally, Maca isn’t a good testosterone boosting agent. In a peer reviewed article in the Journal of Endocrinology. 2003: Effect of Lepidium meyenii (Maca), a root with aphrodisiac and fertility-enhancing properties, on serum reproductive hormone levels in adult healthy men. The study found “In conclusion, treatment with Maca does not affect serum reproductive hormone levels.” This article shows quite conclusively that in healthy men, Maca did not boost testosterone levels at all. So, it is a failure in this pathway.
As a muscle builder Maca seems to fail, but it does have a considerable amount of data as a sexual stimulant. So, if you want to get your girl pregnant or you don’t have interest in sex, it could be just the supplement you need. In rats, Maca was shown to both increase sperm count and increase sexual desire. In a recent journal article Asian Journal of Andrology Effect of Lepidium meyenii (maca) roots on spermatogenesis of male rats. The article found that spermatogenesis increased significantly in the group given Maca supplements. In a similar article, rats given Maca extract show an increased interest in sexual activity. Studies in humans are not as conclusive, but sexual desire in higher thinking animals like humans is more complex and harder to study, so it is more than likely that Maca has a positive effect.
If you are looking to build muscle, skip Maca, but if you need to get your girl pregnant or want to increase your sexual desire, Maca looks like a must have supplement.
